Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God Saint John of God attracted various types of support in his charitable work, benefactors, helpers and a group of men who associated with him more closely. This last group developed in time into a Brotherhood continuing the work and spirit of John. This group eventually became Religious Brothers, and quickly spread their Hospitaller work to other cities in Spain, Italy and the new world. In 1572 the Church recognised the band of brothers as a Religious Institute. The Brothers kept alive the spirit of their founder, adding the vow of Hospitality to the usual three vows of religion - Poverty, Chastity and Obedience. From its very beginning Hospitality has also been promoted and expressed by lay men and women. Saint John of God, in his letters, repeatedly spoke of his co-workers who were not brothers and the help he received from them. The Saint John of God story is one in which employees, benefactors and volunteers have supported Hospitality at every moment of its history. The work of Hospitality continues today in 52 countries - Saint John of God may have died - but his spirit lives on through the Brothers and many others who passionately believe in the 'Hospitaller way'. The Life of a Brother The Brothers live their life in common, sharing together their daily lives in a spirit of brotherhood which is supported by a commitment to prayer and the celebration of the Eucharist, and by a dedication to serving others in the Hospitaller mission. To aspire to be a Brother is a life time's work. It demands self-sacrifice, service of others and a real commitment to developing a sound relationship with the Lord.Nearly all Brothers have a professional qualification in a caring profession, but their profession of vows commits them to 'brother others' as a Hospitaller Religious. The first stage is Postulancy… this usually last 6 months, living in one of the Province's small communities, sharing the work of the community. There are some studies to develop the postulant's faith and sacramental life, and to know more about the Order and its rich heritage. The Noviciate is a two-year period where the new Brother learns about Religious life, prayer development and many other things… and at the same time working within the Hospitaller ministry.Formation has some structure, but it is designed around the Brother's own growth and developmental needs. At First Profession the Brother takes the vows of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience, as well as the special vow of Hospitality. The Formation of a Brother of Saint John of God continues with both spiritual and professional development.
